Fast Weight Loss Is Possible - But Only For a While

Imagine that you stopped eating today. You would probably feel slightly hungry this afternoon, and then feel as if you were absolutely starving this evening. Tomorrow, you would probably still have these urges to eat, but your stomach would have shut down, and as time went on, it would no doubt not be as troubling / painful as it was on the first few days.

Within the first two days of cutting out all of the foods you previously enjoyed - your body would resort to your fat stores for energy. Hence, a dramatic period of weight loss would follow - where the body relies solely on the fat stored in places such as the abdomen, thighs, chin, and so on for its fuel.

Possible, But Impractical

If you read the above, and are now considering a total elimination of food as a viable way to lose weight, think again.

The method may be successful - but in the long term, it will do more damage than it does good, and in many cases, people who do this will put on more weight than they started with.

Additionally, a few other reasons why such a drastic diet may be impractical are:

  • Risk of malnourishment.
  • Risk of organ shut down and failure due to malnourishment.
  • Inadequate intake of fluids.
  • Lethargy, lack of concentration, tiredness.
  • If dieting is stopped, body stores more fat for the future.

This last point is probably the most important reason why dramatic and extreme weight loss is not a good idea. Let’s take some time to explain it in more detail.

The Body Learns From Your Actions

In the case of massive and sudden weight loss, the body actually remembers what you are doing, and adjusts the metabolism to handle a similar type of situation in the future. This is the number one reason why extreme diets fail in the long run.

Whilst you may think you have been successful in ridding your body of excess weight, the brain actually instructs the body to convert as much food as possible in to fat to be stored for the next time that a similar situation is encountered. Even if you never intend to go on such a diet again, you will find that overeating will very easily result in a huge gain in weight in the future.
